Scale Capacity

Accuracy, Reliability, and Smart Weighing for Afghan Industries

Scale Capacity

Scale capacity is a key factor when selecting a scale. Depending on the application, a scale’s capacity can range from 1,000 kilograms for vehicles like Mazda trucks or Khawars, up to 200,000 kilograms for weighing rail lines, and even higher.

In our country, trailer scales are often referred to as “100-ton scales.” However, this number does not represent their actual capacity. Scales are generally designed according to road transport regulations, meaning a fully loaded trailer typically weighs a maximum of 45 to 50 tons.

Therefore, if you plan to install a scale in a location where vehicles may exceed road limits and carry loads beyond standard capacity, it is important to inform the supplier so that the scale can be designed based on the actual required capacity.

Weight Measurement in Scales

Mechanical Scales

In the past, mechanical scales used mechanical levers to measure weight. These scales were either flush with the ground or built with pits. Depending on the scale’s length, 4 or 8 concrete pedestals were installed under the platform, and mechanical levers were placed on top. Weight measurement in this system was based on the lever principle.

Electronic Scales

Today, mechanical levers are nearly obsolete, replaced by weight measurement sensors (load cells). Depending on the scale’s capacity, dimensions, and manufacturer design, a scale may have 4, 6, 8, or more load cells.

Weight Display

In mechanical scales, weight was displayed using a weight-indicator cabinet or, in some models, a dial that converted the force from the levers into readable numbers.

In electronic scales, weight information from the load cells is sent to a junction box and then to an electronic display, which shows the weight digitally. Besides displaying weight, electronic displays may also offer features such as printing, data transfer to a computer, and various outputs based on weight.
