What is a weighbridge (scale)?
Accuracy, reliability, and smart measurement for Afghanistan’s industries.
What is a weighbridge (scale)?
A weighbridge is essentially a scale designed in the form of a bridge, on which a wheeled vehicle can be placed to measure its weight. The word “bascule” (bascule) in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and some other languages means “moving lever,” but in practical use, it is equivalent to the English term “weighbridge.”
Main components of a weighbridge
A weighbridge can be divided into three main parts:
-
Mechanical structure of the scale – the bridge on which the vehicle rests.
-
Measuring equipment – the tools that measure the vehicle’s weight.
-
Display – shows the measured weight.
Each of these parts requires detailed examination. Below is a brief overview, followed by a detailed look at each component.
Mechanical structure of the weighbridge
As mentioned, this structure is essentially a bridge, which can be made of metal, concrete, or a combination of concrete and metal. This mechanical structure is usually installed on a concrete foundation.
The weighbridge can be installed at ground level (pit type) or above ground. Ground-level weighbridges include a pit. Additionally, weighbridges can be designed as fixed or portable.
In the following sections, the specifications and differences of each type of weighbridge will be explained in detail.
Dimensions of the weighbridge
A weighbridge can be designed in different dimensions, but typically its width matches that of a standard vehicle, usually 3 meters, and the length is selected based on the type of vehicle.
For example:
-
In Afghanistan, trailer weighbridges are commonly 18 × 3 meters.
-
Ten-wheel truck weighbridges are typically 8 × 3 meters.
These dimensions can vary depending on the specific requirements and applications.
